Day #128- Sunday Night Blues

Dear Teacher with Sunday Night Blues,

Years ago, my husband and I (both teachers) began the open acknowledgment of “Sunday Night Blues.” I think most teachers know what I am referencing. The feelings start rumbling low Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. It’s the sudden halt to all fun and relaxation mixed with the sad awareness that Monday is imminent.

By the time you make a grocery trip, pack a lunch, or iron an outfit for the next day, the Sunday Night Blues have escalated into a full-blown panic attack. You wonder where the weekend went and remember all the things you meant to do but forgot, like re-roofing the house and patching the dry wall in the back bedroom.

Friday the possibilities seemed endless. Now, there’s nothing left but the ashes of a well-planned weekend that went up in smoke.

By 10:00 p.m., you’re sifting through the rubble for one, tiny sliver of fun left, but even a dilly bar at Dairy Queen can't sweeten reality.

Like it or not, Monday is coming.

But here is an encouraging message. There are only a few Sunday Night Blues left on the school calendar. To be exact, there are only six left to X out with a Sharpie, for some districts even less. When the school year first started, who would have ever believed we would make it this far? Initially, I didn’t even buy my boys' school clothes. They couldn’t try anything on, and I truly believed we would shut down again within the first two weeks.

Yet, here we are, getting ready to close the door on the 20-21 school year.

We can do this, people. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Squint closely. I promise it is there. That little glimmer of hope, coupled with warmer, longer days, helps soften the blow of this Sunday being so blue. Don’t you think so too?
